First up is the solar system diorama. Fortunately Ben had a passion for the solar system when he was 6, so it didn't take too much convincing to get him motivated to want to do this. He came up with the idea on his own and did most of the painting himself . He has yet to write the report, but he's got some good notes started.

Once the solar system is taken care of it's "Which Cheese Grows Mold the Fastest?" for his science fair project. We haven't gotten any further than that, but I'm certainly looking forward to platefuls of moldy cheese strategically placed all over my house. It takes me back to my 7th grade days when my project was making cheese, and I even set my alarm to get up in the night and stir the cheese...or something like that.
Destination Imagination has begun, and the crafting and building will soon be taking place. Ben's team has decided to tackle a challenge in which they create a tall structure out of newspaper and write a play with homemade props to go with it. As one of the coaches I still need to read up and find out exactly what we're supposed to do, but the tournament is in March, so we've got some time to work.
Of course what elementary school wouldn't be complete without Valentine's Boxes? That will be on the weekend plans in a couple of weeks. I think I lucked out though, because I'm guessing boys are slightly less picky about their boxes than girls !
Time to reload the glue gun and get started!

Please blog all projects and steps in said projects so that in a few years my boys can copy....:)
Love the solar system - NICE! Moldy cheese...not so nice.
seriously! That solar system is ...like... pretty! Way to go Ben!!
Wow! These are major projects! Luckily my 3rd grader hasn't had to embark on ANYthing like this yet. I am not sure if that is good or bad?
And I agree...that solar system is out of sight! Way to go! Seriously hang on to that and you could probably sell it on ebay (to a mom who doesn't want to actually DO the project) for a hefty price. Seriously.
Oh yes I remember your cheese project. There was even a spill and you had to start over. It was in the oven for one phase, wrapped in a heating pad for another.
Check with Luke about easy Science Fair projects. He started the week before and won.
WOW!! Your kids have a wonderful
advantage of teacher parents!!
I am really looking forward also to the projects in the coming years! Way to go, Ben!!
wow. you are a good mom, hilary. mainly, to allow ben to PAINT IN YOUR HALLWAY! i am the type of mom who suggests a project that involves very little mess and very little work. some call that laziness, others call it genius. i even bought an adorable valentine box at pottery barn and tried to convince victoria to bring THAT to school instead of making one from scratch out of a cereal box! i'm embarrassed to admit what i suggested she make her "homemade instrument" out of (rubberbands and kitchen tongs = took 1 minute to make). enough about me... way to go, ben... very impressive! (and way to support him, hil!)
